Sal is talking to Mookie before he delivers a pizza (Image from: ilmmakeriq.com)
One thing that was very prevelant throughout the movie was that since there were no pictures of African Americans on the wall, the African American customers at Sal’s Pizzaria took great offense to this. They believed that since they were the only customers of Sal’s, then there should be pictures of prominant white people in society. Some of the people that they want on the wall include: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and Jackie Robinson. Just with those people alone, they were all very influential. PEople who are African American would view this film and feel the same way. Back when the movie was made, racism was still sort of engrained in people’s every day lives when it shouldn’t have been. The audience could asume that this movie was made the way it was to show how dumb it was that racism was still an everyday thing. Just how Sal’s one son acts towards the customers, shows that some people really did not like the African Americans during this time but others, such as Sal and his other son, did not have any issues with them. White Americans would also view this film and see how irrational they could have been acting towards other races and want to change the way they act on a daily basis.
A mob of people watch Sals Pizzaria bing burned down (Imag from: http://mentalfloss.com)
One of the reasons why Sal did not want to put pictures of African Americans on his wall was because he felt that since he built his restaurant by hand, that he did not have to put things on his wall that he did not want on there. Since the conflict between Sal and his customers grew greater, they decided to trash his store and burn it down. People who viewed this movie and have ever built something that they own by hand, would symoathize with Sal and feel the same way. People who build their own things take pride in what they do and do not want others to take what they built and chnge it on them. The Mob broke out after a fight broke out between Sal and 2 customers that did not agree with how they were being treated. Radio Raheenm was killed by a police officer and then the mob decided to burn his restaurant down. After this haooened, everyone on the block realized how stupid it was that this happened and the American public that has seen this film, would feel the same way.

Cher and her friend brings the new girl into their friend group. Image from: deadline.com)
The movie of Clueless centers on stereotype on the life of a blonde white female. Throughout the movie, the audience gets a better understanding of who Cher really is. The audience is able to determine that Cher truly has a good heart but she is looked at as just a ditsy dumb white girl or “clueless”. This stereotype has been along for a very long time and it will continue to be in peoples minds for some reason. Cher is not actually Clueless, she looks at the world differently and solves her problems in life that may not be the same as what most other people do. Her bubbly creative personality can easily make viewers interpret her as the stereotypical “dumb blonde”. Before getting to even know Cher, viewers have already created their own opinions on her making it difficult to look past their already set in place stereotyping of the white school girl that she is. Her character makes it very tough to not put that stereotype in place because of how she acts abot everything. But how she acts, is reallt not how she is. Throughout the movie, once she starts to figure out who she really is, she starts to show her true colors by falling in love, doing the right thing for others, and also trying to help her dad on the very important case that he is working on. Another way that she shows tht she is not clueless is by doing what she does for her teachers.
Cher and her friend are walking throguut the school. (Image from:thisinsider.com)
Something that this movie also shows throughout the movie is that the American society views white girls as clueless and only wears short clothing that shows off alot of skin. Throughout the movie, every girl that is shown, is wearing some sort of either business suit that includes a short skirt, or very revealing clothing. The one character that wears clothing that is not like this is the new girl and she is seen as weird and needs a makeover oin the eyes of Cher. Cher is the most popular girl in the school and everyone looks up to her. They dress like her, act like her, and do the same things she does and this also shows how white girls are effected by eachother.
Marion is killed in the shower by the mother of Norman Bates (Image from: denofgeek.com)
One thing that Alfred Hitchcock does in both his films, Vertigo and Psycho, is that whenever there is a scene with some violence, Hitchcock tends to not show it. He lets the audience infer what is going on without actually showing it. When Norman, dressed up as the mother, kills Merian Crane, he only shows Normans face blurred out, the knife in hand, and then Lila screaming and falling with blood coming out of her when she is in the shower.
In the movie Vertigo, Hitchcock does the same thing when Madeline runs up to the church bell tower and “Jumps”. Even though she is not the one that jumps, hitchcock does not initilly show her jumping. He does a great job with leading the viewer up to that point, without having to show it.
Scottie wakes up from his nightmare (Image from: bfi.org/uk.com)
Hitchcock also loves to do close ups on the actors faces whenever there is extreme emotion or when it is just an important scene. This is done with Norman Bates and again here with Scottie in Vertigo. Instead of the shock that is shown on Scotties face in the scene where he is waking up from his nightmare, Hitchcock shows the sinister look on Norman Bates’ face. He also uses the scene where Merion is fleeing to see her boyfriend and she realizes that the Police officer is following her. The worried and frightened look on her face is captured by Hitchcock. HE also shows the watching, looking and duality of both Norman bates and Madeline. Both characters have two different realities that they are living. Norman is both his mother and himself, and madeline is a wife to someone she is not married to.
Marion is given a lump sum of money to bring to the bank for a customer that bought a house (Image from reel3.com)
One thing that Hitchcock loves to do is to make the audience focus on something and make it seem important, but then make it not even really revelant at all. He does this with the money in Psycho and also Scotties Vertigo. When norman Kills Marion, he gets rid of all of the money without even realizing it is there. Scottie comes down with a severe case of vertigo in the opening scene and it does not come back around until the scene where Madeline “Kills” herself.
Bernard Herrmann (Image from: imbd.com)
In both movies, Hitchcock used Bernard Herrmann to write and conduct the musical score. Both of the scores in the movies are perfectly made to go along with the plot and scenes of the movie. Using the same person to make the score, will often create the same affect throughout the movie because of their own personal style.

Avatar is a movie where Jake sully (Sam Worthington), Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver go to a planet called Pandora to take over their resources. They are going there to mine the mineral unobtanium, which is a very strong and powerful mineral. They are met by the force of the Na’vi tribe which is native to Pandora. Jake Sully, Sam Worthington, is tasked with becoming close with the Na’vi tribe as a Na’Vi-human hybrid called avatars. The only way for the humans to take over the planet peacefully, is for Jake to gain their respect.
Mise en scene
Jake is trying to unify the Na’vi people against the humans
Jake Sully is tasked with becoming one with the Na’vi tribe for the humans to get a hold of the mineral unobtanium. He does this by getting close with the Na’vi leaders and he starts to have a relationship with one of the so called leaders. The picture above has Jake sully, an avatar, in the forefront of the picture. This would symbolize that he is the center of attention and it would pretty much rank the authority of the people in the picture. It starts with Jake and then goes back from there. Jake faces the unruly task of becoming one with the people, but when he does this, he realizes that what the humans are doing is wrong and he fights back against them. He is trying to bring people together in this picture.
Neytiri is connecting with the energy from the hometree and the Eywa spirits
Throughout the course of the movie, every little detail is the thing that make the movie. All the little details made the scenes seem so perfect and realistic. From the way they would sway the plants back and forth as the wind blew by or as people would walk by them. The way the director and cinematographer used the lighting at night was brilliant. The lights would only come from the plants/stars in the night sky or from the plants and yet is always seemed like the perfect amount of light. Just the fact that he made everything pitch back but those things really made them pop out even more and really set the mood for the scenes. The actors even did a great job at playing their roles and made the scenes seem believable. The use of sound played a big part in the movie too. An example of this are the scenes are in the jungle. All you hear are these crazy animal sounds. The sounds are very creepy and the actors portray their characters with so much emotion. James did a wonderful job setting the scene in this movie. Part of the emotion that they portray is done by the lighting and all the cool colors that Pandora has on it at night. This is especially brought forward through the scenes with the hometree.
Narrative Structure: Three Act Structure
Act 1:
Jake is in his Avatar for the first time
Jake Sully is a wounded marine that wakes up on a spaceship and has no idea where he is going. Once he wakes up, he is tasked with the knowing that his brother has died and has been cremated. Jake is one of many soldiers and civilians about to touch down on Pandora which is about 4.3 light years from Earth. He is alongside many scientists that are going to also observe the land and see what natural resources are there as well. The passengers are all instructed to wear a full-face breathing mask since the atmosphere of the planet will not support any human life whatsoever. It would only take 20 seconds of exposure to the poisonous atmosphere of the planet causes unconsciousness, with death occurring. The soldiers and civilians are led by Colonel Miles Quaritch. His main task is to take control of the planet and their main natural resource which is Unobtanium. The most famous line from the beginning of the movie would have to be “were not in Kansas anymore” by Colonel Quaritch. Jake is tasked with becoming one with the Na’vi people while being an Avatar. The colonel warns the soldiers and Civilians that the Na’vi are very hard to kill and that everything out there is trying to kill them. Jake meets helicopter pilot Trudy Chacon which he will be spending most of his time with. She plays a major role in what happens in the movie. The first scene really ends when Jake is linked with his avatar and falls down a hill into some flowers. He is then chased by a wild animal and is then confronted by Neytiri who is part of the Na’vi people.
Act 2:
Jake and Neytiri form a special bond during the second act of the sotry
Jake is caught by a bolo thrown by a patrol of Omaticayan warriors. Their leader is Tsu’Tey (Laz Alonso), next in line to the throne and the man Neytiri is expected to marry. Neytiri stops them from harming Jake by telling them that it could be a sign of the Eywa and then he orders Jake to be brought to their home. Once Jake is at the hometree, he tells the Na’vi people that he is only there to learn from them but once he falls asleep, he is awaken back into his human form. The Colonel wants to know anything and everything that he can from Jake about the tribe. The only way for Jake to get his legs back is to gain the trust of the Na’vi people. Grace, the main scientist on the voyage, sees how much that this is taking over the colonel and takes her operation into the mountains away from everyone. She cannot handle what the colonel has become. Once Jake has some more time, he tells the colonel that he is at the right point with the Na’Vi people that he might be able to get them to relocate. Jake attends a Na’vi ceremony where he tells Neytiri that he has already chosen her, and she says that she has chosen him. While he is asleep, he is transported back into his human self and she is awaken by bulldozers clearing trees and brush all around her. Once Jake finds this out, he goes back into his Avatar and tries to stop the bulldozers from continuing their mission of clearing the sacred ground. Grace and Jake tell the colonel that the people will never leave the sacred ground of the hometree because of how much it means to their life. Once the bulldozers clear the land, Jake is no longer welcome with the Na’vi people. To regain their trust, he has to summon Toruk Mato which would make him the most powerful leader of all of the Na’vi people.
Act 3:
The battle has begun against the Na’vi people and the humans
Jake gains control of toruk Mato and speaks as toruk Mato. He leads and says it’s time to ‘send a message’ to the sky people that this is their, their land. But to do so, they first must go to each of the Na’vi clans to ask them to come and fight as one. This is an easy task as Toruk Mato. Jake summons over 20,000 Na’vi people and the human military will soon be over run. The huge Na’vi force begins to arrive from the sky and on the ground. Jake on his toruk, Tsu’Tey, and other warriors engage in battle with the military aircraft. This is when it gets interesting. Jake leads in a massive battle on the ground and air. While he is being overrun, the colonel takes matters into his own hands. He steers a ship with a massive bomb on it towards the hometree. Jake sees the ship and then goes to destroy it. He slows the ship down until he is able to finally bring it down. This is when the colonel gets into one of his robotic suits and tries to kill jake. Neytiri is there to save the day and kill the colonel. Jake wakes up to his oxygen mask on his face and then permanently become one of the Na’vi people as the humans go back to Earth.
This film follows the three act structure based on how the characters evolve throughout the movie.
Cinematography:
Jake and Neytiri are kissing after choosing one another
The cinematographer, Mauro Fiore, uses colors and the music to portray emotion and feelings throughout the movie. Every time there is a scene at the hometree, the music is very soothing and there are always slow moving people and objects that are all in very soothing and cool colors. There are very rarely any warm colors throughout the movie and this really helps capture the emotion. He also uses close ups to capture the raw emotion of the characters and this is definitely seen by the audience and has an impact. There are many scenes that Neytiri is with Jake and they are close together and the camera is right on them. This shows the emotion on both of their faces and is definitely brought forward more than if it were a faraway shot.
Editing:
The Na’Vi people are performing a ritual to try and bring grace back to life
The most effective use of editing in the movie is between the Na’vi people and Eyqa at the hometree when grace dies and they are trying to bring her back to life. The camera goes from Eywa, to the people and all of the cool colors and back to grace. The audience almost would get chills down their back when this happens because you could really feel the emotion and connection between the people. During the war scenes, the camera goes between many different battle scenes that are only a few seconds long but the plot never goes backwards. Everything that is shown is always after the last scene.
Sounds of the movie:
Ground warriors are racing towards the human ground troops
The movie has a very native and soothing soundtrack to it. The music only happens when the Na’vi people are all together. They all sway to the beat of the music and this creates a soothing and compassionate environment between the people. The loud noises in the film are all during the battle scenes and are either from the gunshots, bulldozers, planes or the ground riders of the Na’vi people.
Genre:
Jake is leading his warriors to battle
Avatar would fall under the Action/Fantasy with a little bit of romance built into it. Jake is tasked with fighting with what he believes in and his own people. This happens because he falls in love, with Neytiri and with the help of the Na’vi people, he fights off the humans and calls Pandora home.
During the final scene, Jake is forced to come to Chinatown and show the dad where the mysterious girl is being kept. (Image from: www.2ndfirstlook.com)
During the final scene of the movie, the director portrays Chinatown is Los Angeles to be a very dark and dull place. In many cities, Chinatown is somewhere where there are usually a lot of people, bright lights and very vibrant colors. The original Chinatown opened in Los Angeles in 1938. The representation of this Chinatown is nothing like what it actually looks like in real life. Even though it is late at night, there would still be a lot of people and the bright lights that are accustomed to Chinatown.
Jake is being saved from the orange grove that he was investigating. (Image from: www.2ndfirstlook.com)
Another thing that is not really correct in the movie is how the actors are dressed. The 70’s were a time where people were free to express themselves however they felt like and they usually did this in their clothing. All of the actors in the movie are all wearing dark or very dull colors when many would say that the 70’s were a very colorful time in history and this is where fashion really started to take off. instead of the one color suit that the woman is wearing, they might have worn a multi colored suit or maybe not even a suit at all. The feel that the director was going for is definitely a dark and mysterious feel because this time period was definitely not like that. This is a time where women started to actually show more skin and the clothing was more revealing. In the movie, all of the actors are dressed very conservative.
Jake sees the woman that he loves be killed (Image from: federicodecalifornia.wordpress.com)
Something that the audience would feel throughout the course of the movie would be that it seems like most people in Los Angeles are up to some type of crime. This movie does not show many people who are just bystanders in the movie. every character that they show is somehow wrapped up in some type of crime or up to something that is not good.Los Angeles is a city where people come from all over the world and live there. Especially in Chinatown, the only Chinese people they showed in Chinatown were at the end and there were only about 15 people. Chinatown would be packed with Chinese people because that is there culture and there tend to be much more Chinese people than other people in Chinatown.

Clarice is tasked with trying to get information from Hannible Lector (Image from: http://www.slate.com)
From the begginning of the movie up until this scene, the director is introducing the key characters in the movie such as Hannabil Lector, Clarice and JAck Crawford. Clarice is stuck with the tough task of talking to Hannabil Lector to try and figure out who Buffalo Bill is. She is the top student of her class in the academy and she is trying to work for Mr. Crawford so this is an amazing opportunity for her. She has to walk through this gruesom hallway passed these horrible people to get to Lector and the scene where they talk is definitely one to remember.
Hannabil Lector kills two police officers and escapes his cage (Image from: http://www.maxim.com)
During the movie, Buffalo Bill is continuing to kill women and the FBI is trying everything they can to stop him. Hannabil Lector is someone who knows who Buffalo Bill is and is also very dangerous himself. When he is asked by the govenor to help in the cathing of Buffalo Bill, he gets locked up in a cage surrounded by armed guards. When Clarice comes to visit him, he gives her a clue as to where Buffalo Bill is. Once she leaves, Lector takes advantage of the officers feeding him to kill both of the men and escape while wearing the face of one of the officers. This is a turning point in the movie for both Lector, Clarice and Crawford. Lector escapes in an ambulance when they think he is one of the officers.
Clarice goes to the house of Buffalo Bill to get details about a case but does not know it was him. (www.housekaboodle.com)
This scene is one that starts the end of the movie. Clarice takes a clue that Hannibal Lector gives her and she follows up on it. Following a suspition that crawford and the FBI are not at the location of Buffalo Bill, Clarice goes to the home of a woman that knew one of the victims. When she is there, she sees a man who lives in the house that seems to be harmless. Once she sees the butterflys in the house, she finally realizes that the man is Buffalo Bill. She is all alone and has to take him down by herself. She eventually shoots him and the rest of the FBI is soon to follow at the house. Lector is never to be seen again and Clarice ends up working for the FBI and presumably works for Crawford. Lector calls Clarice and tells him her that he is having an old friend for dinner meaning his former doctor.

In this scene, the mother is getting treatment from the doctor because she does not feel okay from being addicted from her medication for her diet. (Image from: Imbd.com)
In the movie, the director uses editing to make scenes go much faster than they would be if there was no editing, The mother, gets addicted to her perscription drugs that are suppossed to be helping her with her diet. She is ashemed of her son of being addicted to drugs at the beginning of the movie, but then she gets addicted to her pills towards the middle to the end of the movie. The director uses editing to show what is going through the mothers head and the audience can see that. When the doctor comes in the room, the mother does not hear anything that he says and all of the scene is fast forward into one short scene. The audience would get the sense that the mother is just in her own world and is not actually aware of what is going on. When she turns on the TV, this is also how the director uses the same technique to show repetition between the mother and the TV. Th mother evolves into the same character as her son, his girlfriend as his friend. When at the beginning of the movie, she was totally different.
This is from a series of scenes when the characters get high during the movie.(Image from: Movie Mezzanine.com)
Every time that the actors get high, there are a serious of scenes that only last a second and one of the last ones is this one of the actors eye. There are needles, heroin, blood cells, and other things that all make up these mini scenes to kind of show that they got high and to transition from them being not high, to them being high, This allows them to get high without actually showing them inserting the needle and getting high on the camera. The audience gets the point during these short scenes and is definitely gets more and more dramatic as the movie and the characters progress. In the beginning of the movie, the actors get high a few times but it defintely gets more and more repetative towards the end of the movie. The music and sounds during this time are also very dramatic and give the sense that the characters are sort of giving up on themselves by getting high so much. The audience sees the stress and pain in the last mini scene and this is the eye of the character. The pupils and the redness in the eyes would show that they are being stressed and feel pain. The little lines of redness in their eye is definitly dramatic and makes the audiece feel for them.

The camera angle is showing the simplicity of the town and the scariness of the mansion up on the hill (Image From:Flexpointe.wordpress.com)
The cinemetographer, Stefan Czapsky, shows this scene in what the audience would convey as normal people going about their simple lives and something creepy living up on the hill. He does this by having the colors of the houses all pastel colors such as light blue, light green, yellow and pink. The audiences eyes are drawn to the darkness of the hill because it is so dark and so large right in the middle of the camera angle. He did a great job with the placement of the clouds and showing how large the hill actually is. Even though the detail of the mansion is not the greatest, it does not matter because the audience gets the picture of how dark and scary it actually is. Everything in the picture is so uniform and the hill seems out of place almost, but it definitely creates a dramatic effect. The audience is drawn to the middle of the screen and it definitely creates a dramatic effect. What person is not drawn to a big dark hill in the middle of the screen? Not many people would say that they are not drawn to it.
Edward is trying to figure out how to eat something as simple as a pea with his hands. (Image from: Moviefone.com)
When Edward is introduced to simple every day things such as eating, he is tasked with trying to figure out how to eat with his scissor hands. He has a very tough time adapting to simple things in life such as this. The camera is zoomed in on his face and it truly shows the raw emotion on his face and the audience can really see that in his eyes and his facial expression. The bags under his eyes, the messiness of his hair, and just the look on his face almost make it seem like he is very scared and truly does not know what to do. The fear in his eyes almost makes it seem like he really does not know what he is doing and maybe does not like what is happening to him but does not know anything different. This is when the audience would start to feel bad for him that he is such an outcast and this is where the movie really starts to turn. Edward goes from this innocent character, to what people think is a monster which simply is not true.

The faun is holding Ofelia because she is scared of the General since her mother just died and she does not know what to do (Image:Hello Giggles)
At first glance, the viewer would see the scene being a dary and dreary part of the film. Without knowing whether the creature is nice or not towards the girl, the audience would assume that the girl was scared of the faun because in most films, the creature is viewed more as a villian. While digging deeper into the image, the audience would see that Ofelia is holding onto the faun and that the faun is holding her in a soothing way. It is unclear why they are cuddling this was but the audience gets a sense of comfort after knowing that the girl is not in any real danger. The faun is resting his head on her head and she is definitely feeling conforted and it is apparent that they are friends.
The mother is holding what the general found while Ofelia was underneath the bed and this is when she questions Ofelia about it. (Image: Film Quarterly)
The first thing the audience sees is the face of the mother and immedietly thinks that the mother is either mad at Ofelia or she is incredably scared of what she is holding. The grin on ofelias face would make the audience think that she is trying to calm the mother down just by her facial expressions but the audience does not know what exacly that is or what they are talking about. The thing that the mother is holding would symbolize a baby and it looks like one as well. The audience views is at a gift of life of the unborn baby. The mother is obviously pregnany and that is made clear by her baby bump and also the maternity dress she is wearing. The thing in her had is a root structure of somekind and the way she is presenting it, it almost looks like a dead baby so it will be interesting if the audience find out if her baby makes it or the mother or baby die during child birth.
